The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family go about their daily lives.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
