The star has given the entirety of his £25,000 award cash to the MVT, which works to preserve the Britain's independent music venues.

Fender was given the cheque on mid-October as his third album the album was declared the top album of the past year.

He has chosen to donate the funds to the MVT, in recognition of the crucial part grassroots venues played in his beginning days.

"I personally wouldn't be doing this success if it weren't for all the shows I performed around the area, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," stated Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these venues have permanently closed – approximately one-sixth of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, major artists such as Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all backed the trust in its initiatives to help venues survive, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which goes to help independent venues.

Fender also took part, collecting more than £100,000 on his recent tour to assist 38 local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation supported spaces that were dealing with possible closure due to issues caused by water damage, blazes and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Other venues received monetary aid in improving infrastructure and gear that helped performers and fans.

"The notion that money from performances in big venues supports the independent spots, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just common sense," Fender has stated.

Fender is not the first artist to contribute his award prize money to charitable organizations.

Back when they won the prize in the mid-90s for their release Different Class, frontman Jarvis Cocker stated that the act would give their cash to the organization War Child.

In 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite shared her prize among several charities, like the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"I also donated a £1,000 to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they lacked updated gear," the artist explained to outlets.

Two years ago, the band donated their winnings to the community center that developed their band, in addition to other grassroots music organisations.

And 1994 winners M People donated their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was found to have the disease.

"Winning was sufficient," remarked artist Heather Small. "The cash was the bonus but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our success impacted another person's life."

Recently, the MVT revealed it had saved a couple of grassroots venues in the South East, by placing them under public stewardship.

The first in that area and the second in Bristol were bought under the community ownership scheme, which is backed by a national body and enthusiasts who purchase "stakes" in the buildings.
