The direst possible consequences of the global heating for the UK have been detailed by researchers, including a searing 4C rise in average temperatures to a 2-metre rise in sea level. Another scenario envisions a drop of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt farming and energy needs.
Plausible Extremes, Not Predictions
These effects, a number of which are linked to irreversible climate shifts, are seen as improbable but possible. The researchers explained that these models addressed a shortfall in planning that had left the UK ill-prepared for catastrophic possibilities.
"The worst-case scenarios we have detailed are not forecasts, but they are plausible," said the professor who led the study. "The nation has been planning in the absence of the tools to assess extreme possibilities. We've now given planners what they need to plan for climate outcomes they wish to avoid, but can’t afford to ignore."
A Suite of Extreme Weather Scenarios
Another collection of dire projections details the possible scale of severe conditions between now and the end of the century. These suggest that temperatures could soar in some months by up to 6C higher than the norm, while rainfall could be three times normal levels.
The chance of the extreme scenarios coming to pass remains uncertain due to unknown factors about what action will be taken to combat climate change and how the Earth's systems will react. This analysis was likened to security threat evaluations or stress tests for the banking sector.

- Severe Heating: Worldwide averages soaring past 4C by 2100 could occur if international cooperation fails or if strong feedback loops such as the tropical forests perishing release its huge repository of carbon. This would result in extreme and prolonged heatwaves and water shortages hitting the UK in summer.
- AMOC Shutdown: A key circulation system, the North Atlantic current, is weakening and becoming unstable due to climate change.
