RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
