At least 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
