Arrangements for Trump-Putin Talks Postponed Days After Budapest Negotiations Announced

Currently exist "no preparations" for US President President Trump to confer with Russian President Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has stated.

Recently Trump stated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Budapest within two weeks to address the Ukraine conflict.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration clarified the two had had a "constructive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was not "required".

The White House declined to provide further information on why the talks had been delayed.

Previous Developments

The US president had discussed a Budapest summit via telephone with Putin, a day before meeting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the White House.

Certain accounts suggested his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with those familiar suggesting the president had urged him to cede extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Moscow.

Yet, on this week Trump embraced a ceasefire proposal supported by Ukraine and European leaders to freeze the conflict on the present positions.

"Leave it as is in its current state," he stated.

Russia has frequently resisted against pausing the existing front lines.

Moscow was only interested in "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister commented on Tuesday, implying that pausing conflict would simply constitute a short-term truce.

Diplomatic Positions

The "underlying reasons" of the conflict demanded attention, Lavrov emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a series of comprehensive conditions that include the recognition of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president said talks regarding the battle positions were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to prevent dialogue.

He also said the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the delivery of long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's unscheduled call with Trump last Thursday occurred before rumors that the US was planning to provide extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the weapons consideration that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the missiles had emerged as a "strong investment" in international relations", he added.
