An Tale of Surprising Kindness: When a Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dorm Floor
Back in the year 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I assumed to arrange accommodation upon arrival, but upon reaching the city, a big convention was happening and every single backpackers hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.
Hailing from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could just sleep at the terminal ā only to discover the local airport, unlike Singaporeās, does not operate all night. Unsure of what my next move should be and growing worried, I hopped on a city-bound bus and started wandering towards the casino, thinking I could pass the evening in an establishment that was open through the night. That wouldnāt put me in the ideal condition for nailing the admissions interview the following day, yet, as a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.
The world needs more individuals who show such kindness.
Apparently, I appeared out of place since a female student noticed me walking aimlessly through the city center and inquired if I was OK. I explained my situation and without hesitation she offered I was welcome to sleep on the floor at her university residence at the local university ā which was perfect, given that my the important interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering a meal: one stuffed baguettes she had taken home her part-time job. I was able to use a hot shower and a protected spot and safe to spend the night.
With hindsight, itās clear to me what a big chance she took as a young woman allowing a male stranger who was a complete stranger stay in her room. In those days I operated under my own unawareness and did not consider about things like that. Today, as a parent, Iām amazed she offered that help ā and remain incredibly thankful.
I didnāt end up attending that university, and I lost touch with that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of kindness. My sincere desire is that karma has rewarded her good deed many times over. Our society requires more folks like that woman.
